How to Clean a Vinyl Fence

Seventy-six percent of vinyl is used at residential properties compared to commercial properties. This makes a lot of sense because vinyl fencing is a very attractive option for homeowners. It comes in variety of colors, and it’s easier to clean and care for than traditional wood fencing. So what is the best method for cleaning your vinyl fence? Let’s dive in.

Why Regular Cleaning Is Important

Even though you don’t have to worry about painting or staining a vinyl fence, it can accumulate dirt, mold, and mildew over time. Regular cleaning keeps your fence looking its best.

What You’ll Need

Before you start, gather the following supplies:

  • A garden hose
  • A bucket
  • Mild detergent or specialized vinyl fence cleaner
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda (optional)
  • Magic erasers
  • Soft cloth or sponge
  • Soft-bristle brush
  • Rubber gloves
  • Spray bottle

Step-by-Step Cleaning Process

1. Pre-Rinse the Fence

Begin by using a garden hose to rinse off loose dirt and debris. This initial rinse helps to remove surface-level contaminants and makes the cleaning process more effective.

2. Use a Mild Detergent, Fence Cleaner, or Vinegar

In a bucket, mix a solution of mild detergent and water. You can use about 1/4 cup of detergent for every gallon of water. (Alternatively, you can use a specialized vinyl fence cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions.) You can also try white vinegar, by using a half cup vinegar to one gallon of water. Using a soft cloth or sponge, apply your cleaning solution of choice to the fence. Start from the top and work your way down. Make sure the entire surface is covered with the solution, paying special attention to any particularly dirty spots.

3. You Can Also Use the Magic of the Magic Eraser

We’re big fans of the magic eraser for cleaning. Make sure to wet the eraser first, then go to town. Sometimes, the eraser will fray at the ends, so just clip them off and keep going.

4. Scrub Stubborn Stains

For tougher stains that you can’t get with your cleaning solution or the magic eraser, use a soft-bristle brush to scrub the affected areas gently. Avoid using abrasive materials or brushes with hard bristles, as these can scratch the vinyl surface

5. Rinse Thoroughly

After scrubbing, thoroughly rinse the fence with your garden hose. Make sure to remove all soap and residue to prevent streaking and potential damage to the fence surface.

6. Address Persistent Stains

If some stains persist, you can create a paste with baking soda and water. Apply this paste to the stubborn areas, let it sit for ten minutes, then scrub gently with a soft-bristle brush. Baking soda’s mild abrasive nature can help lift stains without damaging the vinyl.

7. Final Rinse and Dry

Once all stains are addressed, give your fence a final thorough rinse with the garden hose. Allow the fence to air dry, or if you prefer, wipe it down with a dry cloth to prevent water spots.

By following these steps, we hope you can get your vinyl fence looking just like new. If you’d rather not tackle the but still want your fence cleaned, please let us know as we’d be glad to help.
